TREATMENTS FOR MEN – GENERAL INFORMATION
Dermatology and Aesthetic Medicine Centre WellDerm® offers a full package of body care treatments for men. All of these treatments were designed to meet the specific needs of male skin which differs from female skin in many aspects.
Men’s skin, in comparison with women’s skin, comprises more collagen fibres and elastin, which makes the skin firmer and more elastic. Both sexes also differ with the pattern of collagen fibres and the structure of the connective tissue, thus male skin can be even up to 25% thicker than female skin. Male epidermis may count even as many as 30 layers, while female only from 14 to 20 layers. In comparison to female, male subcutaneous tissue contains much less fat.
Aging process is also different for men and women: male wrinkles appear later and advance much faster. After 30 years of age their skin flexibility drops dramatically and further furrows appear, and with time become deeper and more visible.
Men differ in hormones production and their impact on skin – and testosterone plays vital role. It significantly increases sebum production. Therefore, male skin is often oily and suffers from more intense acne. For this reason male skin more often than female suffers from pimples and enlarged pores. It is also more acidic, with pH level about 5.4.
Due to the difference in hormone levels, male skin has more pigment which determines skin colour, thus men usually have darker skin than women.
Hormones also stimulate the activity of hair follicles, so men tend have more hair. Higher number of sweat glands in male skin causes higher perspiration than in the case of women. Statistically, men devote less time to body care (ca. 10 minutes a day), yet everyday shaving damages the hydrolipid layer of the skin. It reduces the natural protective barrier of the skin and may lead to increased dryness, irritation and even cuts. Furthermore, men rarely use sun protective cosmetics.
